Q. Why would I want to become a basketball referee? A. Many answers come to mind. Here are a few.

  • To be involved in sports, specifically basketball
  • To help promote quality officiating
  • To promote good sportsmanship
  • To stay physically active
  • To meet new friends and share experiences

  • Q. How much of my time would it involve? A. You control how much time you want to devote to officiating.

  • Training for new officials is usually on Wednesday nights from 6:30 pm to 9 pm
  • Training for new officials is usually from September through December
  • You can officiate 1 night a week or most every night if you desire between middle November through the middle of February
  • Depending on your level of officiating, you will officiate anywhere between 1 game and 4 games in one evening
  • One game last under an hour. You should plan on being at your game a minimum of 1/2 hour prior to the game
  • There are other leagues that run at different times of the year. You can practically officiate all year around
  • Camps generally run from April to August and last anywhere between 1 day up to 1 week depending on the camp

  • Q. How much can you expect to earn officiating? A. The Texas UIL dictates the minimum that schools can pay officials. Here was the rate for the 2002-2003 season:

    Q. How do I gain the knowledge and experience to become an official? A. As with anything in life, you only improve with knowledge and experience. Knowledge comes from rule books and case books which are provided when you join. Experience comes from training at the meetings, training camps and officiating games.

  • Training for new officials begins in September on Wednesday nights
  • The chapter accepts new recruits at each Chapter Meeting "Never Too Late To Start"
  • Chapter meetings are held on Wednesday nights beginning in October
  • Camps are held at various times of the year, generally between April and August
  • You can attend camps held by our chapter or by other organizations
  • You will participate in pre-season games generally in late October and early November

  • Q. How do I become a referee? A. Contact the chapter in your area. For the Dallas Basketball Officials Association you may print out the following PDF forms:

    Q. What areas of the Dallas metroplex will I be required to officiate? A.

    The metroplex is divided into several areas. You are required to select one or more areas of the metroplex. The more areas that you select, the greater the chances of getting more games. Fill out the following information and send to the assignment secretary listed below.
